A GYMjot Project: Off Mic

The parts of the practice nobody talks about.

Off Mic is a space to talk honestly about what it's actually like to be a musician. Simply a room of up to 8 musicians speaking one at a time about what's really going on in their practice. No audience, no notes, no polishing. The format * We open with a short grounding and a round of check-ins. * Each person gets uninterrupted time to speak and relate it back to their current creative life. eg. Blocks, fears, decisions you're sitting with, project expectations, deadlines, things you're proud of or nervous about. * The group listens. No discussion, no advice, no cross-talk, unless the speaker chooses to open one question to the room during their time. * We close with a short shared exercise and a grounded return. Who it's for: Musicians only, 18+ For musicians already writing, playing live or releasing, who want a space to think honestly about the practice. This is self-selected, honour system, with no vetting. This isn't a mental health service. If something surfaces that needs more than this room can hold, we'll point you toward proper support outside it. Details * 2026 Sessions: Wednesday 16 September, October 21, November 11 (TBC) * Arrive 7:15pm, start 7:30pm sharp, wrapped by 9:00pm * Trainscendence Lvl3 (Bio-Cycle room), Rolling Stock Lane, Collingwood VIC 3066 * $25, 7 open spots per session * Any questions reach out to reuben@gymjot.com.au * Off Mic runs monthly - this is the start of an ongoing series, not a one-off Space Ethics: - Arrive on time - respect each other’s time. - Honour the speaking totem - one voice in the room at a time. - Phones away - be present for whoever's speaking. - Confidentiality - What's shared here, stays here. What this is NOT: - NOT a space to share songs. - NOT a feedback system - NOT an active networking session. - NOT therapy: counselling and/or professional advice is not offered or provided.

Totally fine. Check-in and sharing are both pass-friendly, no pressure to speak beyond what you're comfortable with.
What if I don't know how to connect what's going on for me back to my creative practice?
That's normal, and it doesn't need to be a clean link - the room will help you find it if you're stuck.
What happens if something heavy comes up for me?
This isn't a mental health service and nobody in the room is trained to give clinical support, but if something surfaces that needs more than this room can hold, we'll point you somewhere real. Support Act's Wellbeing Helpline (1800 959 500) is free, confidential, and built specifically for people in music - worth saving even if tonight goes fine.
