Forty is just a number. The party is the point.

The 40th birthday venue Melbourne will tell their friends about

You've been to enough 40ths in function rooms above pubs. Yours doesn't have to be one of them. Two vintage train carriages on a rooftop, seven themed rooms below, six bars, and a venue that makes every photo look like you put more effort in than you did.

Bar minimums from $1,000 · weeknight · capacity 60-400
By 40, you know what works. You also know what doesn't — and a generic function room with a "milestone birthday package" definitely doesn't. Trainscendence works for 40ths because the building does the heavy lifting. The rooms have personality so you don't have to pay for decorators. The bar is in-house so no one has to run a cash float. An event host runs the night so you can actually catch up with the friends who flew in.
  • Two vintage Hitachi carriages on the rooftop — a backdrop your photos will thank you for
  • 60 to 400 capacity — intimate dinner, full-on dance floor, or whole-building takeover
  • Six bars in-house — no double-handling, no minimum-spend stress for guests
  • Custom canapé + drinks packages or BYO catering — your call
  • In-house event host runs the night — you stay a guest at your own party
  • Weeknight bar minimums from $1,000 — Sunday arvos especially great for 40ths with kids
Common questions

Things people ask

How much does a 40th at Trainscendence cost?
There's no flat venue-hire fee — instead we use a bar minimum spend that varies by room and night. Weeknights start at $1,000 (small themed rooms) and scale up to $5,000+ for the whole rooftop on a Saturday. Whatever your guests drink at the bar counts toward that minimum, so for most 40ths of 50+ people, the minimum is hit naturally and there's effectively no venue cost on top.
How many people can come?
Depends on which space. The whole rooftop fits 120 standing. A single themed room fits 60-100. Whole-venue takeovers fit up to 400. Tell us your headcount in the enquiry and we'll suggest the right fit.
Can we have a sit-down dinner instead of a cocktail party?
Yes — some rooms work great for seated dinners up to 60. The whole rooftop is better for cocktail-style mingling. Tell us your headcount and your preferred format and we'll suggest the right space.
Are kids welcome (for an afternoon component)?
Sunday afternoons are great for family-friendly 40ths. Kids welcome until 9pm with a parent. Then the venue clears for the 18+ night portion. A lot of 40ths run exactly this format and it works really well.
Can we have food?
Yes — three options. (1) Our preferred external caterer Fabulous Catering delivers to the venue, invoiced separately. (2) Some rooms allow you to BYO platters or order pizzas in. (3) For larger or curated events, we can arrange custom canapés and drinks packages. We'll talk options based on your event.
Can we decorate the room?
Yes, within reason. No nails in walls or anything that damages the rooms (which all already have a lot of personality). Balloons, flowers, photo backdrops, custom signage — totally fine. Confetti — please ask first because we've had cleanup adventures.
How far in advance should we book?
For Friday and Saturday nights, 6-8 weeks is comfortable. For weeknights, 2-3 weeks. We've done last-minute Sunday afternoon bookings with 5 days' notice — just send the enquiry and we'll tell you what's actually available.
How do I get there from the city?
We're on Easey Street in Collingwood, a 15-minute Uber from the CBD or a short walk from Collingwood station (Mernda/Hurstbridge lines). Look up at the back of Easey Street — you'll see two trains on the rooftop. That's us.
